Francis Grier: The Passion of Jesus of Nazareth (UK and broadcast premiere)

Jointly commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and VocalEssence of Minnesota, Francis Grier's new setting of the Passion story, to a specially-written libretto by the poet Elizabeth Cook, is a setting based on the Gospel accounts of the Passion but also includes some incidents and individuals who don't appear in the Gospels. Composer and poet say that "We want to communicate not only the intense suffering of Jesus and his mother but something of the experience of others drawn in to the vortex of events. The language and the music show how easily delicacy and discernment may be extinguished by the dynamics of the mob: the terrifying violence of this – a violence and injury to our own natures.  Characters and crowd are dramatically individuated by language which is at times stark and strong to communicate the playing out of these events in the jostling present."
